Axar Patel to lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025: Reports

The highly anticipated IPL 2025 is set to kick off on March 22, but Delhi Capitals have yet to name their captain for the 18th edition of the tournament. According to the reports, KL Rahul, who was a top face for the captain, has declined the offer to lead the franchise. Now the team is looking for another captaincy option for the upcoming season.

According to the reports, Axar Patel, one of the key contributors with bat, ball, and field for India’s victory in ICC Champions Trophy 2025, is likely to lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025. The all-rounder was retained by DC for INR 16.5 crore ahead of the mega auction. Notably, the 31-year-old previously also led the franchise in the absence of Rishabh Pant.

After releasing Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals attempted to buy him back in the auction but couldn’t succeed, as Lucknow Super Giants secured him for a record-breaking INR 27 crore, the highest price in IPL history. According to earlier reports, KL Rahul denied the captaincy of DC and now the fresh reports of IANS suggesting that another big Indian name in the squad, Axar Patel is set to be named as skipper. 

Axar Patel has been with Delhi Capitals since 2018. He has played a total of 82 matches for Delhi, scoring 967 runs and taking 62 wickets. He played amazingly well last season for the team. The all-rounder is currently in great form. In the Champions Trophy 2025, he took 5 wickets and scored 109 runs at number 5 for India in 5 matches.
