Steve Smith announces retirement from ODI cricket

Steve Smith, regarded as one of the best batters of this generation, has announced his retirement from ODI cricket after the elimination from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, losing the semi-finals to India by 4 wickets. However, he will be available to play Test cricket and T20Is for Australia.

On 5 March 2025, Wednesday, Steven Smith, who led the Australia team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, announced his retirement from the 50-over format. The right-hand batter will continue to play some of his best format Test cricket and T20Is.
Steve Smith announced his retirement from ODI cricket saying, “It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said. “There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.”
“Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way,” he added. “Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship Final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage,” He added.
Steve Smith has played 170 ODI matches for Australia, scoring a total of 5800 runs with an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He also captained the Australian side in ODIs before the sandpaper incident. Moreover, he recently captained the Australian team to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as Pat Cummins was injured, and led the team to the semi-finals of the tournament with the main fast bowlers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood.
