Shubman Gill appointed captain of Indian Test team ahead of England series

In a major development for Indian cricket, 25-year-old Shubman Gill has been named the new captain of the Test team ahead of the upcoming series against England. He is the 37th player who will lead India in red-ball cricket. He will lead the team on the India tour of England 2025 starting from 20 June.

On 24 May 2025, in a squad announcement for the England tour, the BCCI announced Shubman Gill as the new Test captain of India. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will serve as his deputy.

Shubman Gill’s Captaincy Record 

Gill has captained India in a total of 5 T20I matches and won 4 of them with win percentage of 80. However, he is yet to lead the national side in ODIs or Test matches.

The 25-year-old has good experience as a captain in the IPL. He is the current captain of the Gujarat Titans. Overall, he led the team in 24 matches and won 14 out of them and two matches were ended with no results. The win percentage of Gill in IPL as captain is 63.64%.

Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC) (WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akashdeep, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav.

Shubman Gill will lead the team in England. Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair have been added to the squad, rewarding their consistent performances in domestic cricket. Sai is in red-hot form in IPL 2025. However, Mohammed Shami has not been included in the squad for the series. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack along with Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akashdeep, and Arshdeep Singh. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Shardul Thakur are likely to join the squad as all-rounders.
