After leading India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai, Rohit Sharma is now expected to continue as the captain of the Indian Test team for the England tour in July-August 2025. The 37-year-old had opted out of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, sparking speculation that he might not return as Test captain. Some reports even suggested that he would not be considered for the Test side again. However, after his outstanding performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Indian Express reports that Rohit has the backing of the BCCI and the selection panel to lead India in the five-match Test series against England.

Rohit Sharma to lead Test team in England

As a Test captain and player for the last five months, it has been so tough for Rohit Sharma, as under his captaincy, India failed to qualify for the World Test Championship Final for the first time, got whitewashed by New Zealand at home, and failed to retain the BGT trophy in Australia.

According to the reports, now after leading India to its third Champions Trophy title in March, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and selection panel have backed Rohit Sharma to lead the Indian Test team in England for five Test matches.

“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” said a source to Indian Express.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 had been amazing for “Hitman” as he led his team to the victor without losing a single match. He was also named Player of the Match in the big final for his amazing 76-run innings in the 252 chase. From 2023, CWC India has won 23 out of 24 completed matches in ICC limited overs events under his captaincy.

“All Possibilities Are” Open”—Rohit Sharma on Playing 2027 Cricket World Cup

In a Star Sports interview, Rohit Sharma responded to a question about the 2027 Cricket World Cup, saying, “It’s very hard to say that right now,” he said on the prospect of taking part in the showcase in two years’ time, “but I’m keeping all my options open. I want to see how well I’m playing. Right now, I’m playing really, really well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice. I can’t really say 2027, because it’s too far, but I’m keeping all my options open.”

As long as I’m enjoying the sport, I’m enjoying playing the game, doing what I’m doing for this team, and I will continue to play. It is something that really makes me happy. There are a lot of things involved, there’s so much pride, and the way this team is playing, I don’t want to leave this team. The way we are playing at this point in time, there is so much joy, so much fun to play with all of them.” He added.
