Jos Buttler Resign

Jos Buttler has officially resigned from the captainship for England from the white ball format. The decision came right after their Champions Trophy performance and England’s exit from the tournament. Butler now will play his last white ball match as skipper against South Africa on Saturday.

The decision came out after the team had suffered a loss against Afghanistan in their do-or-die match for the tournament. Starting the season with a loss, the team continued for their second loss even being one of the Marquee teams.

Buttler bids Adieu to Captainship

Announcing the decision on Friday, the skipper expressed, “I’m going to stand down as England captain,”. “It’s the right decision for me and the right decision for the team. Hopefully somebody else who can come in alongside Baz will take the team to where it needs to be.”

Announcing his retirement as a skipper, he will continue to play for England and would really like to enjoy the game and bring out the best.  He said, The overriding emotions are still sadness and disappointment. I’m sure, in time, that will pass and I can get back to really enjoying my cricket, and [will] also be able to reflect on what an immense honour it is to captain your country and all the special things that come with it.”

Jos Buttler’s Captainship Record

Buttler took on the responsibility as Eoin Morgan’s Successor in the year 2022 and led the team to winning the T20 World Cup in Australia after a year. However, that was the only time the team saw a winning front in his leadership, and England’s performances have declined significantly since then.

  • Jos Buttler captained England in 36 ODIs, securing only 14 victories.
  • In 46 T20Is under his leadership, the team suffered 23 defeats.

With disappointing outcomes in three consecutive ICC tournaments—the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy. The skipper decided that it would be good for all as he steps down and someone else takes on the skipper’s shoes.

What’s the Road Ahead and Who’s the New Leader?

After the resignation of Jos Buttler, the leadership for the England team can be shifted to Harry Brooke, as he is the front runner for the captainship as new successor. He is one of the rising stars in the England cricket team and has also proved his potential as captain when given responsibility. He led England in the 2024 ODI series vs. Australia, scoring 312 runs in five innings at an average of 78 and a strike rate of 127.86.

Beside Harry Brooke, the next captain could also be Joe Root or Ben Duckett. Both the players are competent and have good records in ODI and enjoy an overall great career profile.
