Rohit Sharma, the five IPL title-winning ex-captain of the Mumbai Indians, was removed from the leadership in the 2024 season after the return of Hardik Pandya to the squad. The franchise removed Rohit Sharma from captaincy and appointed Hardik Pandya as the new leader. This decision received heavy criticism from former players and fans alike. Many were unhappy with the removal of a five-time championship-winning captain, and some supporters are still upset with the management. Fans have continued to urge the team to make Rohit captain again.

Recently, a similar incident happened where a fan urged Nita Ambani, co-owner of the Mumbai Indians, to make Rohit captain again outside the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple.

In a viral video, a fan with folded hands was seen requesting MI co-owner to give captaincy to Rohit again. He said, “Madam, Rohit, ko captain karo.”

Nita Ambani reacted to the appeal of the fan, saying, “Baba ki marzi” (leave it to the Almighty).

Rohit Sharma took the leadership of the Mumbai Indians in the 2013 season and proved himself with the title in that season. Later, he won four more trophies in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 to become the most successful captain of the Indian Premier League. However, after 2020, the team was unable to win the title and reached the playoffs only once in 2023.

On the other hand, Hardik Pandya, who was released by MI ahead of the 2022 mega-auction, won the trophy with the Gujarat Titans as captain in 2022 and became runner-up in 2023. Seeing his success and MI’s struggles, MI management brought back Hardik as captain in a trade in 2024, but the team finished at the bottom of the table in his first season as captain of Mumbai Indians.

In IPL 2025, the Mumbai Indians are looking solid under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. They feature a strong squad with players like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Tilak Verma.
