The 2025 edition of the Asia Cup is in danger of being derailed following the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists. According to a recent report, the bilateral tensions between India and Pakistan have intensified, and amidst this, the future of the Asia Cup hangs in the balance.
The two countries are likely to face each other in the Asia Cup Clashes, the tournament is set for the month of September and will be played in the T20 format. However, due to ongoing clashes, the tournament is most likely to get affected and might be postponed. According to a report by The Times of India, the Asia Cup 2025 might be postponed as the government feels that cricketing ties between India and Pakistan are not ideal at this stage. The tournament was earlier scheduled to be held in India, but reports stated that it would be held at a neutral venue.
Sunil Gavaskar’s stance on the Asia Cup
Talking about the Asia Cup, Sunil Gavaskar also made it clear and stated that it is very unlikely that both teams will face each other, and he even said that Pakistan is most likely to be dropped from the Asia Cup. The BCCI is the co-host of the Multi-nation tournament, but after the attack, things have changed drastically, and the Indian Government has taken some bold decisions related to Pakistan.
BCCI’s stance has always been what the government of India tells them to do. So I don’t think it would be any different when it comes to the Asia Cup. India and Sri Lanka are the hosts for this particular edition of the Asia Cup, so it depends on whether things have changed at all, but if things haven’t changed, I can’t see Pakistan now being part of the Asia Cup, which is going to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.
“I don’t know how it will be. It might be that the Asian Cricket Council could well be disbanded, and you could just have a three-nation tour, that could well have a three-nation tournament, or a four-nation tournament with maybe Hong Kong or UAE being invited. So that could well happen, the Asian Cricket Council could well be disbanded. But I think it is dependent on what happens in the next couple of months,” he added.
The multinational tournament is scheduled for the month of September and will be a T20 Format tournament. The venue and date for the competition are yet to be announced. If India pulls out of the Asia Cup to boycott Pakistan, then there are good chances the tournament will be scrapped in 2025.
