The Asia Cup 2025 is set to begin on September 9 in the UAE with eight teams participating in the T20 format. India, one of the strongest contenders, will start their campaign against the UAE, before facing arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14. After weeks of discussions and speculation about possible names, the BCCI finally announced the official 15-member squad. Suryakumar Yadav has been named captain, while Shubman Gill will serve as vice-captain. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack, with Mohammed Siraj rested for workload management. Sanju Samson is the chosen wicketkeeper, while youngsters like Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag have earned their places after strong domestic and IPL seasons.
The final squad announcement put an end to the uncertainty, but the omissions of some key players have left fans and experts in surprise. Players like Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiwal, and Mohammed Siraj, who were expected to be in contention, did not make it to the squad despite their recent form and proven records.
3 Players who missed out on India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad
Shreyas Iyer
Iyer’s exclusion has been one of the biggest surprises. He had an excellent IPL 2025 season, scoring more than 600 runs and showing consistency as a middle-order batter. Many believed his experience and leadership qualities would make him a key part of the Asia Cup 2025, especially after leading Punjab Kings to the finale after a decade, but selectors have chosen to look for someone else. Reports suggest that fitness concerns and the need to test new middle-order options could have been the reason why he has been kept out of India’s Asia Cup Squad for 2025

Yashasvi Jaiswal
Another shocking omission is Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was once seen as India’s next big T20 opener. Although he has been a top performer in the IPL and for India in previous T20I series, he has not played much in the format since July 2024. The management has preferred Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order, while Jaiswal is being kept for the upcoming West Indies Test series.

Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj, one of India’s leading fast bowlers in recent years, has also been left out of the Asia Cup 2025 Squad. While Siraj has been crucial in India’s pace attack, reports suggest that his exclusion from the squad is due to his workload management. With the Asia Cup being followed immediately by the West Indies Test series, the selectors have decided to give him a rest. Still, many fans believe that Siraj’s experience in pressure conditions could have been valuable in the T20 format.
