Angelo Mathews, one of the best all-rounders of the Sri Lankan team, announced his retirement from Test Cricket on 23 May 2025. The 37-year-old batter has represented the countryside in a total of Tests and over a span of 16 years, he has batted and played with an average of 44.62. Angelo Mathews retired from Test Cricket

Mathew announced his retirement on Monday and updated the fans that he will be playing his last Test match in June against Bangladesh, saying, “With a grateful heart and unforgettable memories. It is time for me to say goodbye to the most cherished format of the game, International Test Cricket!,” Mathews said in a statement he shared on X (formerly Twitter). “The past 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my highest honour and pride.

“The first test match against Bangladesh in June will be my last red-ball appearance for my country. Whilst I bid adieu to the test format, as discussed with selectors I will remain available for selection for the white ball format, if and when my country needs me.” Mathews further added.

Angelo Mathews’ Test Record

Mathews has played a total of 118 matches and has featured in 86 innings. He made his international debut against Zimbabwe in November 2008 and is capable of batting anywhere in the middle-order. Alongside batting, he is also the youngest captain to lead the team into a Test match after four years of his debut.
