Shubman Gill couldn’t have asked for a better start as India’s Test Captain. On Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley, the 25-year-old played a brilliant unbeaten knock of 127 runs and led the team to a strong position at 359/3. It was a captain’s innings in every sense, calm, confident, and commanding. However, despite his success with the bat, Gill has found himself in hot water for a minor but unexpected reason, and that’s his socks.
Why is Shubman Gill in Trouble with the ICC?
During his innings, Gill was spotted wearing black socks with his white Test uniform, a violation of the ICC’s updated clothing and equipment regulations. According to clause 19.45, which came into effect in May 2023, players in Test matches must wear white, cream, or light grey socks only. This rule, based on the guidelines of the Marylebone Cricket Club(MCC), is in place to maintain the traditional look of red-ball cricket. By wearing black socks, Gill unintentionally breached the dress code.

The final decision lies with match referee Richie Richardson. If the referee considers Gill’s action a level 1 offense and believes it was deliberate, the Indian captain could be fined 10% to 20% of his match fee. The penalty could even go up to 50% in some cases and may come with demerit points. However, if the black socks were worn accidentally, possibly due to wet or missing white ones, Gill might escape with just a warning. In the end, it all depends on the match official’s view of the situation.
Gill Powerful Debut Captain Knock:
Apart from the off-field issue, Shubman Gill delivered a solid performance with the bat. Coming in at NO 4, a position previously held by Virat Kohli, he raced to his fastest Test fifty in just 56 balls, then turned it into a fluent century. His knock of 127 off 175 balls, including 16 boundaries and a six, marked his first Test Hundred outside Asia. Scoring another record for himself, Captain received the other end help from Jaiswal, who also scored a century(101), helping India post a commanding total at stumps.
While the ICC may review Gill’s minor dress code violation, his on-field performance has already won the day. With a dream debut as a captain and a potential record-setting knock, Shubman Gill’s leadership era is off to a powerful start, keeping the socks story aside.
