Virat Kohli Might Come out of T20 Retirement for Olympic Gold Medal Match

Virat Kohli, widely regarded as one of the best players in the world, retired from T20Is after leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados. However, he is now making headlines for a potential T20I comeback after a recent interview with Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he hinted at returning to the shortest format of the game.

Kohli Might Come out of T20 Retirement for Olympic Gold Medal Match

Speaking at the Royal Challengers Bangalore Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit, Virat Kohli joked about his T20I return to play the gold medal match at the Olympics.

When asked about if he’d be open to being ‘coaxed’ out of retirement to play for the 2028 Olympics, Virat said, “If we are playing for the gold medal, I may come back for one game (laughs). Get a medal and come back home. It is a great thing. To be an Olympic champion would be a magnificent feeling, the first of its kind.”

Virat Kohli took his retirement from the T20I cricket along with Rohit Sharma in 2024 after winning the T20 World Cup 2025 on 29 June in Barbados. He played a match-winning 76-run innings in the final against South Africa to win the second T20 World Cup for India. He was also a part of the Indian team that won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. The right-handed batter scored second highets run for the team in the tournament with 218 runs in 5 matches with an average of 54.50.

In T20Is for India, Virat has scored a total of 4188 runs in 125 matches with an average of 48.59 and a 137.04 strike rate, including one century and 38 half centuries. He was one of the greatest players of this format and won many crucial games for India with his skills and amazing gameplay. 

Virat Kohli joined the RCB camp for IPL 2025 on Saturday. The team will play their first game of the season on 22 March against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
