Shubman Gill is set to step up to the captain’s post for the upcoming clash against New Zealand. Following the Rohit Sharma Hamstring injury, the hitman was seen missing the net practice sessions. And as per the latest reports, Gill is expected to make his ODI captaincy debut in their upcoming final group stage match against Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand. Currently, Gill serves as vice-captain for the Indian Squad for the Champions trophy.
Shubman Gill and His Captaincy Records
Shubman Gill holds a credential list as a captain and gained attention when he led the IPL Gujarat Titans. Following it, he led the young Indian squad in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, securing a 4-1 victory.
Gill’s ODI Captainship also makes sense as he was named India’s vice captain for the home series against England and the Champions Trophy. Even the current skipper Rohit Sharma, has also acknowledged Gill’s captaincy and his ODI rankings.
Continuing his strong run in the ongoing tournament, Gill has already registered a century against Bangladesh and a crucial 46 against Pakistan. On Thursday, he took part in a private net session to refine his skills ahead of the next challenge.
Rohit Sharma Doubtful for New Zealand Clash
Following the last match injury against Pakistan, Rohit was seen struggling while chasing a ball in the match and had to leave the field by the 26th over. Following the injury, he was not seen much on the field and was seen strategizing with Gautam Gambhir.
After the smooth transitioning of Men In Blue in the champions trophy, the Indian squad is seen practicing in the nets ahead of their New Zealand clash. But the concerns about Hitman’s health grew more when he missed all the net sessions and throwdowns in their Wednesday practice sessions. Citing the current scenario, it might be expected that Rohit Sharma might take a rest day for the New Zealand clash.
Who will replace Rohit Sharma?
Rohit Sharma will be replaced by Shubman Gill as captain, like in the previous match, when he had to leave the field due to an injury against Pakistan. If he decides to take a day off against New Zealand, then he might be replaced with Rishabh Pant or Washington Sundra in the probable XI of the Men In Blue Squad.
Both players are competent to replace Rohit in the match and are also seen practicing in the nets ahead of the clash. Besides them, KL Rahul can also be expected to open with vice-captain Gill, as he has also been a partner in earlier opening partnerships and has experience in the same.
