The captain has recently been called out as unfit and fat for the ongoing Champions Trophy by Kerela’s congress leader, Shama Mohammed. In her now deleted “X” post she called Rohit, “Fat for Sportsman” and went on describing him as “the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had.” 

This wasn’t the first time our demure Captain has been the center of controversy. Facing recent controversy around body shaming, Rohit Sharma has also been the target of controversies previously.

1. Controversy over new profile picture

Winning the T20 World Cup 2024, Indian Skipper posted a new profile photo with a flag to celebrate India’s triumph. In the picture, Rohit was seen planting the flag on the Kensington Oval in Barbados. He gestured this to celebrate the win but soon faced a backlash as the flag in picture seems to be touching ground, which starightly is a violation of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which states that “The flag should not be allowed intentionally to touch the ground or the floor or train in water”

2. Breaching the Bio Bubble 

Thai controversy came to light when a fan named Navaldeep posted a video in which Hitman was seen with Shubman Gill, Navdeep Saini, and Rishabh Pant on New Year’s Eve in a restaurant in Melbourn. As per some tweets, Pant even hugged the fan. 

Now why’s that a controversy, right? To answer that, if all that was true? then it was a breach of COVID-19 Guidelines laid by Australia, because this was the time when India went to Australia to play a limited-overs series and Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the 2020-21 season series against them. But in the end, this was merely a controversy as nothing forward came out.

3. For liking a post with KL Rahul Overrated tweet

At the time of World Cup 2019, Rohit was peaking in his red hot form, hitting 5 centuries so far. And was also the leading run scorer for India. But when he was needed to play a vital role against the Indies, Captain Kohli decided to put him for a rest, replacing the batting with KL Rahul. 

Following the decision, KL failed to put up a great show, which didn’t excite Rohit Sharma, and he ended up liking a post with the caption, “KL Rahul was overrated” giving birth to another controversy.

4. ‘I don’t just walk out for my team. I walk out for my country’

Rohit started another controversy with Kohli when the team left for their West Indies tour. Hitman captioned his picture and tweeted that”‘I don’t just walk out for my team. I walk out for my country’ which indirectly pushed fans to the RO-KO rift.

Right before the trip began, Kohli was seen saying, “I don’t just walk out for my Team. I walk out for my country,”. But soon, Rohit’s tweet went live, and it flooded the internet with the rift still on with Kohli.

5. Unfollowing Anushka Sharma

Famous for creating controversies for his social media activity, Rohit came into the limelight of another one when he unfollowed Anushka Sharma on Instagram. And this wasn’t the first time the cricketer did something similar; earlier, he was also seen as a negative comment to her post. 

Replying to Rohit’s Act, Mrs Kohli wrote, “A wise man once said nothing. Only truth can shake hands with silence in a mess of false appearances…” which added more to the debate.
