Ravichandran Ashwin may soon end his time with Chennai Super Kings(CSK). The veteran Indian off-spinner is reportedly planning to part ways with the franchise. While the exact reason is still unknown, sources suggest that Ashwin has made up his mind and may have already informed the team. Ashwin is also expected to leave his role as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy. He took up the position last year, but continuing in this role might lead to a conflict of interest if he joins another franchise. It seems Ashwin wants to avoid such a situation.
R Ashwin IPL Career
Ashwin has had a long and successful IPL Career. He played 221 matches, took 187 wickets with a decent economy rate of 7.29, and scored 833 runs with a strike rate of 118. Last season, he played nine matches for CSK. He was bought for INR 9.75 crore in 2024, making him return to the team after nine years.
Ashwin started his IPL Career with CSK, playing his first eight seasons(2008-2015) under MS Dhoni. After that, he played for Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals before returning to CSK. Recently, top CSK officials and players, including MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad, have met in Chennai to plan for the next season. Although it’s not clear if Ashwin’s departure was a part of those talks, it does suggest the franchise is preparing for changes.
It is still uncertain whether Ashwin will be traded to another team or enter the IPL Auction. However, given his experience and skills, it’s likely that franchises will be interested in signing him.
This news also comes shortly after reports that Rajasthan Royals’ captain, Sanju Samson, has asked to be released from his team. Changes like these hint at a possible shuffle among IPL teams ahead of the new season.
If Ashwin officially leaves, it will mark the end of another chapter in his IPL journey. He has been one of India’s most respected players, especially in Test cricket, and his next move will be watched closely for further word.
