Mohsin Naqvi has been appointed as the new Asian Cricket Council president, bringing on the new leadership to the council. Naqvi has taken over the position previously held by Shammi Silva who was the head of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). He took over the prestigious chair on 5 April, 2025, Thursday.

The announcement about new leadership was made through the virtual annual general meeting of the members of the Continental body. Taking charge of the ACC, Naqvi will now hold the position for two years.

“In accordance with the decision of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), Pakistan has officially taken over the presidency from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Effective immediately, Pakistan will lead the Council in its mission to promote and expand cricket across the Asian continent. With Pakistan at the helm, the ACC is poised to further strengthen and expand cricket’s presence across Asia, fostering growth and unity within the sport,” a media release stated.

“Asia remains the heartbeat of world cricket”, Naqvi on new leadership role

Expressing his honour and thanking for the new role, Naqvi said, “I am deeply honoured to assume the presidency of the Asian Cricket Council. Asia remains the heartbeat of world cricket, and I am committed to working with all member boards to accelerate the game’s growth and global influence.

“Together, we will unlock new opportunities, foster greater collaboration, and take Asian cricket to unprecedented heights. I also extend my sincere thanks to the outgoing ACC President for his leadership and contributions to the ACC during his tenure.”

Prime goal to focus on the Asia Cup 2025: Mohsin Naqvi

The leadership duties of Naqvi will be tested with the Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in the month of September, 2025. Originally allotted to Indian Land the tournament will now be held on neutral grounds considering the India-Pakistan diplomatic dynamics. Now Naqvi will have to decide which will be the neutral country that will host the six-team Asia Cup. UAE is the favourite but Sri Lanka is also in the fray.
