Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has openly questioned his exclusion from the 2025 Asia Cup squad, despite being fit to play in the Duleep Trophy for East Zone. The 35-year-old, who returned to T20 international earlier this year against England, highlighted his frustration over not being considered for the eight-team T20 tournament, pointing out that if he can handle the demands of five-day domestic cricket, he is equally ready for international T20s. Shami cleared the BCCI’s newly introduced Bronco fitness tests in Bengaluru and emphasized that selection is beyond his control, but he remains determined to perform at his best in domestic cricket, hoping to press his case for a national comeback.
Shami opens up on Asia Cup Snub and domestic comeback.
Mohammed Shami, India’s former Champions Trophy top wicket-taker, was overlooked for the 2025 Asia Cup due to concerns over IPL form and fitness. Despite a challenging IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he took just six wickets in nine games at an economy rate above 11, Shami remains motivated to prove himself. He clarified that he does not blame the selectors, saying, “I don’t blame anyone for non-selection or complain about it. If I’m right for the team, select me; if I’m not, then I have no issues with it. Selectors have the responsibility to do what’s best for Team India. I have a belief in my abilities that if and when I’m granted an opportunity, I’ll give my best. I’m working hard. If I can play the Duleep Trophy, then why won’t I be able to play T20 cricket?” Shami told News24 Sports.
Shami also addressed the emotional hype surrounding India-Pakistan clashes, stating that cricket is not just played with emotions but involves several other factors, and players must follow decisions made by authorities. With the Duleep Trophy approaching, Shami is ready to showcase his fitness and form in five-day cricket, making himself available for all formats. While he admitted he has “Little hope” of an immediate international return, his determination to perform consistently could reopen doors for a comeback, especially with the upcoming home Test series against West Indies.
