The Indian government has approved the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, putting a blanket ban on all money-making platforms. This includes fantasy cricket, rummy, poker, and other games where users place money to earn cash prizes. The Bill was cleared by both Houses of Parliament within three days and now awaits the President’s assent before becoming law. Once signed, all real money contests will immediately stop in India.
The government stated that the decision was needed to protect society from the financial and social problems caused by money-based gaming. According to Union Minister Ashwining Vaishnaw, such platforms work in the same way as chit funds, creating addiction, financial stress, and disputes within families. Companies like Dream11, MPL, My11Circle, and PokerBaazi are expected to be among the most affected since they rely heavily on pay-to-play models. The ban is also likely to hit users who regularly participate in fantasy sports as part of their daily routine.
Impact on Cricket and Indian Team Sponsorships
The effects of the new bill are not only on gaming platforms but also on cricket and other sports. Dream11 is the official jersey sponsor of Team India in a 358 crore agreement that runs until March 2026. With the bans now in place, the future of this deal is uncertain. If the sponsorship is cancelled, the BCCI will need to look for another brand partner before the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE.
Fantasy gaming companies have also played a key role in Indian cricket sponsorship for years. From advertising during the IPL to being involved in grassroots events, their involvement has been a steady revenue source. The sudden removal of these companies may lead to a reduction in cricket sponsorship money and affect marketing opportunities across tournaments.
Other sports are also expected to face similar challenges. Many leagues and teams depended on fantasy platforms for promotion and funding. With the withdrawal of this sector, both players and organizers may struggle to secure financial support. The ban, while aimed at addressing social issues, is therefore expected to reshape not only the digital gaming industry but also the sponsorship landscape of Indian Sports.
