The Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) has decided to extend the contract of chief selector Ajit Agarkar until June 2026. The decision came shortly after the announcement of India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The board has been impressed with Agarkar’s work since his appointment in June 2023, particularly with the way he has handled the team selection and overseen transitions in all formats.

During his tenure, India has achieved significant results, including winning the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. The team also reached the final of the ODI World Cup in 2023. Agarkar’s decisions have been praised for balancing experience with youth, while also managing the retirement of senior players like Virat and Rohit from Test and T20s. His leadership in selection has also paved the way for the new captains, with Shubman Gill leading the Test side and Suryakumar Yadav appointed as T20I Captain.

BCCI’s faith in Agarkar’s Vision

Officials within the BCCI have confirmed that the extension was agreed upon before the start of IPL 2025. The board values the progress India has made under Agarkar’s guidance and is now confident in his ability to manage the next phase of transition. His renewed contract now runs until June 2026, covering several important assignments, including the T20 World Cup in 2026.

The current selection committee, which includes SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra, and S Sharath, could also see changes soon. Sharath is expected to be replaced after completing his four-year term, while the board will soon invite fresh applications for positions in the men’s senior, women’s, and junior selection panels. With the Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled next year, the Women’s selection committee, chaired by Neetu David, is also nearing the end of its five-year tenure.

By extending Agarkar’s contract, the BCCI has shown faith in the consistency and direction of the national team’s development. With major tournaments lined up and younger players taking on key roles, his position will be crucial in maintaining stability and ensuring India remains competitive across formats.
