MCA names Wankhede Stadium stand after Rohit Sharma, honoring his legacy in Mumbai cricket

MCA pays tribute to Mumbai legends as stands at Wankhede are renamed after Rohit Sharma, Sharad Pawar & Ajit Wadekar.

The Mumbai Cricket Association has named a stand at the Wankhede Stadium after Rohit Sharma. The decision for the naming was taken in the association’s annual meeting on Tuesday, April 15. Besides Rohit, other stands will also be named after former India captain Ajit Wadekar and former MCA president Sharad Pawar.

“Today’s decisions reflect our deep respect for the pillars of Mumbai cricket and our determination to build an even stronger future. These stands and this lounge shall forever echo the legacy of those who built Mumbai’s cricketing spirit — brick by brick, run by run,” MCA President Ajinkya Naik said in an official statement as quoted by the Hindustan Times.

MCA announces new stands name, pays tribute to player

The Divecha Pavilion Level 3 stand will soon be named the Rohit Sharma stand. Two more stands, Grand Stand Level 3 and Grand Stand Level 4, were renamed as the Sharad Pawar Stand and the Ajit Wadekar Stand, respectively. In a heartfelt tribute, the MCA also announced that the match-day office at the MCA Pavilion will now be called the MCA Office Lounge, in memory of Amol Kale, the former president of the association who passed away while in office. The decision was taken in the 86th Annual General Meeting of the MCA.

Releasing the official announcement, MCA said, “The MCA remains committed to preserving the legacy of stalwarts who have made invaluable contributions to the sport while continuing its mission of cricketing excellence.”

The release also stated Another major announcement of the meeting, and said, A major highlight of the meeting was the decision to increase the corpus for affiliated clubs to Rs. 75 crores, with a forward-looking plan to enhance it to Rs. 100 crores in the coming years. This significant move is aimed at strengthening grassroots infrastructure and supporting the long-term growth of cricket across the city.”
