Vignesh Puthur, the new impact player for the Mumbai Indians came into limelight after he replaced Rohit Sharma in second innings and then delivered impressive wickets for the team. This inning was one of the rarest events where Mumbai Indians has given a debut to a rookie player with zero Professional T20s in his name and that too in a match against their arch-Rivals.
Who is Vignesh Puthur?
Puthur is a young 23 year old spinner who hails from Kerala was signed by five time champions Mumbai Indians at the base price of 30 lakhs in the mega auction the past year.
Puthur is yet to represent Kerala at the senior level. He has only played for the State at the under-14 and under-19 levels. Vignesh played for Alleppey Ripples in the Kerala Cricket League, where he only picked up two wickets from three matches. He also had a stint in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.
In his early cricket days, Vignesh bowled medium pace and spin until local cricketer Mohammed Sherif advised him to try leg spin. Then he moved to Thrissur to further his cricket career and was one of the leading bowlers in the Kerala College Premier T20 league for St. Thomas College.
His consistent performances for Jolly Rovers Cricket Club earned him a place in the Alleppey Ripples squad for the KCL, which ultimately changed his career leading him to a spot in the MI for IPL 2025.
Puthur’s Game-Changing Spell against CSK
Puthur’s innings paved the way for Mumbai’s comeback at Chepauk after their first innings where the team managed to put mere a respectable score on the board. He started his IPL stint today with bowling against Ruturaj Gaikwad in the 8th over of the second innings and set up for a big wicket dismissing the yellow army captain.
In his second over, Vignesh nabbed Shivam Dube, who holed out to Tilak Varma at long-on. Deepak Hooda became Puthur’s third victim when he picked the deep square leg fielder off an attempted slog sweep.
