Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday, saying the retirement remains in effect immediately. Having scored almost 4,000 runs from his 149 ODIs, the man himself announced his retirement and has called time on his long 13-year ODI Career.

The 36-year-old Maxwell, who made his debut against Afghanistan in 2012, has featured in 149 Matches for Australia and has amassed a total of 3990 runs with an impressive strike rate of 126.70 and an average of 33.81. In addition to his batting, he has also taken 77 wickets with his useful off-spin and has grabbed 91 catches in the format.

Felt like i was letting down Team: Maxwell on his retirement

Confirming his retirement on the final world podcast, Maxwell revealed that he doesn’t see himself making it to the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup and requested the Selectors to have someone younger in his position.

“I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how body was reacting to the conditions,” Maxwell said. “I had a good chat with [Australia chair of selectors] George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward. “We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him ‘I don’t think I am going to make that, it’s time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own’. Hopefully they get enough of a lead-in to hang onto that role. “I always said I wasn’t going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn’t want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons. “They are moving in such a clear direction so this give them the best look at what the line-up is leading into that next World Cup. I know how important that planning is.”

Maxwell has played crucial roles in Australia’s 2015 and 2023 World Cup title wins. In the 2023 World Cup, he achieved his most iconic knock, scoring an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan and leading the team to victory, despite battling severe cramps. The allrounder, who will continue to play T20s for Australia and has not called time on his first-class career, admitted the physical demands of the 50-over game had become too much.
