The Oval, July 31, the Toss curse continued to haunt Indian Skipper Shubman Gill as the captain lost his fifth consecutive toss in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, with England electing to bowl first in the fifth and final Test at the Oval. The streak now stands at 15 toss losses in a row across formats, including Tests, ODIs, and T20Is in international cricket.
Shubman Gill Toss Record:
Shubman Gill, who took over as India’s test captain earlier this year, has lost all five tosses in the current five-match Test series against England. The venues include Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval now. Each time, England owns the toss and chooses to field first at their home venues, taking on the advantage of the overcast conditions and bowler-friendly pitches.

Gill’s toss luck has now become one of the most talked-about points in international cricket. With the latest coin flip going against India, the team has now lost 15 consecutive tosses across formats, marking an unwanted record in men’s international cricket. These records include tosses lost under three different captains, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and now Shubman Gill. The last time India won a toss was back in January during a home T20I.
This is also a rare moment in history. As per records, this is the 14th instance of a team losing all five tosses in a five-Test series. To add, it’s the second such case in the 21st Century, the last one being India’s tour of England in 2018.
Ironically, this was also the first toss win for Ollie Pope in the series, who is leading England in the absence of Ben Stokes. England had elected to bowl first in all five Tests, and this time, the conditions once again are perfect for the decision. While the tosses don’t directly determine the results of the matches, they certainly play a role in strategy. As India looks to level the series 2-2, fans and experts of the game will hope that their fortune with the coin in the toss and on the pitch with win changes soon.
