The Champions Trophy is a one-day international format of cricket administered by the International Cricket Council. Played in quadrennial format this tournament is also known with the name of Knockout Trophy.
Starting back in the year 1998, this tournament has witnessed 8 editions with the 9th edition underway. Starting from the grounds of Bangladesh to the current edition hosting Pakistan, these trophy grounds are shared amongst the ICC members.
Featuring top cricketing nations, this cup has witnessed thrilling performances and historic wins. Over the long course of time, several teams have registered the trophy in their names and have lifted the trophy. With Pakistan being the defending champions the current ninth edition of the trophy is waiting for its winner. 1998 Winner: South Africa
The inaugural season of the tournament was won by the South African team. The final of the season was played at Dhaka, on November 01, 1998, between South Africa and West Indies. Playing first, West Indies posted a score total of 245 and in turn to chase South Africa posted a total of 248/6.
Winning the inaugural season, Africa beat Indies by a margin of 4 wickets and Jacques Kallis was announced as the player of the series for his contribution with bat and ball.
2000 Winner: New Zealand
Moving on to the next season not only have the grounds changed but so are the winners. The second season for the champions trophy was won by New Zealand who beat India by 4 wickets.
The final of the trophy was played on the grounds of Nairobi (Gym) on October 15, 2000. Playing first, Men In Blue posted a total of 264, with an amazing knock from Ganguly’s bat who scored a total of 117 runs. In chase, the New Zealand team chased the score securing victory over India. Player of the series was awarded to Chris Cairns who scored 102.
2002 Winner: India & Sri Lanka (Co-Champions)
For the first time, the tournament saw a co-champion, both the finalists India and Sri Lanka agreed to share the trophy as the final of the match was washed out by thunder rain, and lightning.
2004 Winner: West Indies
Taking on their chances of inaugural season defeat, the West Indies finally secured a win in their name during the fourth edition of the trophy. Playing against England, the Indies won the final with a difference of 2 wickets and 7 balls remaining.
The final of the season was scheduled at the Oval Grounds and playing first England posted a total of 217, which was easily chased by Indies. Player of the match was awarded to Ian Bradshaw.
2006 Winner: Australia
Playing the final against West Indies, Australia won by 8 wickets with 41 balls remaining using the DLS method. Playing first Indies posted a score of 138 which was then chased by Australia. The chase was disrupted by rain and then the DL method came into force making the Aussies winner of the 2006 Champions Trophy.
2009 Winner: Australia
The next 2007 season winner was also in favor of the Aussies, in the final faced New Zealand who posted 200 runs on the scoreboard, chasing this Australian batters took the ground and knocked the opposition bowling order winning the game with 6 wickets and a difference of 28 balls.
2013 Winner: India
Finally, The Men In Blue team also declared themselves as the winners lifting the trophy on 23 June 2009. The final for 2013 was scheduled on the grounds of Birmingham. Batting first India posted a total of 129 for 20 overs, chasing the score England fell short at 124 and India registered a win by 5 runs.
This championship Trophy season, the finale of the season was disturbed by rain, and the match of 50 overs was finally reduced to 20 overs after a wait of 6 hours.
2017 Winner: Pakistan
The last defending champions of the trophy. Pakistan won the 2017 season playing against India. The finale of the cup was scheduled on the oval grounds and Pakistan batting first posted a total score of 338/4.
Following the first Innings, India batted and rain was disrupted. The match went for a reserve day and following it, Pakistan won the final with a gap of 180 runs.
