A Glorious Chapter ends, as Nicholas Pooran Retires from International Cricket at 29

West Indies cricketer and IPL Sensation Nicholas Pooran has shocked the world by announcing his retirement from International cricket on Tuesday Morning. Pooran’s decision came after a few days of Heinrich Klassen, another great of his time. Breaking the news of his retirement, Pooran took to his Instagram Post and thanked his fans for supporting him throughout the game. The 29-year-old batter has hung up his boots and retired from International Cricket but will continue to play in domestic seasons and Franchise cricket.

He made his international debut in 2016 and went on to become one of the top batters for the Caribbean side. Playing a total of 61 ODIs and 106 T20Is, Pooran has accumulated 4200 runs with several match-winning knocks and captaincy for his team. 

Confirming his retirement, the West Indies Cricket Board confirmed and said, “Cricket West Indies extends sincere gratitude and appreciation to Nicholas Pooran for his outstanding contributions to West Indies cricket. Nicholas officially informed the leadership of his decision to retire from international cricket, bringing to a close a significant chapter in his career.”

Taking to Instagram about his decision, Pooran said: “After much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international Cricket.”

He further added: “This game we love has given and will continue to give so much – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.”

The Trinidadian represented the West Indies 167 times for West Indies, scoring 1983 ODI runs at 39.66 at a strike rate of 99.15, and 2275 T20I runs, the most by a West Indies player, at a strike rate of 136.39.Pooran bows out as the most capped West Indies player in T20Is (106 matches) and the highest run-scorer for his team in the format (2275), having overtaken Chris Gayle at the 2024 T20 World Cup.
