Shubman Gill, the Indian Test captain and vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, is set to miss the Duleep Trophy after falling ill ahead of the tournament. Reports have confirmed that the 25-year-old opener, who was originally named captain of the North Zone side, has been advised rest and will not participate in the Zonal competition starting August 28 in Bengaluru.

Gill had been battling a viral fever over the past week and even underwent precautionary blood tests in Mumbai. While there was initial optimism that he might feature in North Zone’s opening match against East Zone, it has now become clear that he will not take part in the tournament. In his absence, vice-captain Ankit Kumar will lead the side, while Shubman Rohilla, already named as a standby, has been confirmed as Gill’s replacement in the squad.

Gill’s Health concerns ahead of the Asia Cup

Gill’s illness comes at a time when the Indian team management is finalizing preparations for the Asia Cup 2025, which is set to begin on September 9 in the UAE. Having been appointed as Suryakumar’s deputy for the continental tournament, Gill’s health is now a concern for selectors and team officials. The Asia Cup will serve as a key preparatory event for the ICC World Cup scheduled next year, making Gill’s availability crucial.

The 25-year-old has been in excellent form. Earlier this month, he returned from England after a record-breaking Test series, scoring 754 runs in five matches of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. His performances cemented his place not only in the red-ball setup but also in India’s white-ball plans, which is why his absence from the Duleep Trophy has grabbed attention. The Boards of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) has repeatedly emphasized the importance of senior players featuring in domestic competitions when not on national duty. Gill himself has often spoken about his commitment to domestic Cricket, but this time illness has forced him to step aside.

For now, all focus is on his recovery. While sources suggest his condition is not serious, the next two weeks will be crucial in determining his match readiness. Team India will be hoping that their vice captain is fully fit and available before the Asia Cup begins.
