David Warner Surpasses Virat Kohli to join the Elite T20 top 5 run-getters list

Australian veteran David Warner has etched his name into T20 cricket history by surpassing India’s Virat Kohli to become the fifth-highest run-scorer in the format. Warner achieved this milestone while representing London Spirit in the Hundred 2025 during their match against Manchester Originals on August 12. Despite Warner’s 71 from 51 balls, the London Spirit fell short by 10 runs in a chase of 164.

Warner, who retired from international cricket in 2024, has continued to dominate T20 leagues worldwide. His knock against Manchester Originals helped him move past Kohli’s tally of 13,534 runs, bringing Warner’s career total to 12545 runs in 419 matches at an average of 36.80 and a strike rate of over 140. Kohli is now sixth on the list and boasts a slightly higher T20 batting average of 41.92 with nine centuries and 105 half-centuries in 414 matches.

Most Runs in T20 Cricket

Warner’s consistency this season has been impressive. In the Hundred 2025, he has scored 150 runs in three matches at an average of 75.00 and a strike rate of 141.00, including two half-centuries. If he scored 27 or more runs in his next outing, he would surpass Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik(13,571) to climb to fourth in the all-time T20 run-scorers list.

The all-time T20 list remains led by West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who scored 14,562 runs in 463 matches. He is followed by fellow West Indies Kieron Pollard (13,854 runs) and England’s Alex Hales(13,814 runs). Shoaib Malik(13,571 runs) rounds out the top four on the list of most T20 runs in a career. Warner, who is now in the elite top 5 players with most T20 runs, is just 1000 runs away from challenging Gayle’s record, a target that could be achievable given his current form and fitness.

He finished his T20I career with 3,277 runs in 110 matches and has also excelled in IPL, scoring 6,565 runs across 184 matches with Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, making him the only overseas batter to surpass 6,000 IPL runs. Additionally, Warner has played in leagues including BBL, PSL, CPL, and Vitality Blast, consistently leaving his mark wherever he plays.

While the London Spirit have struggled in The Hundred 2025, winning only one of their three matches so far, Warner’s performances remain a bright spot. His ability to anchor innings, score quickly, and remain composed under pressure has been a major factor in his success in the T20 career.
